A Fitting Memorial for Rev. John Carrie

John Carrie died suddenly on 5 March 2008. He had served as the minister of Queensferry Parish Church with dedication and distinction for the previous 36 years. He was held in great esteem and love not only by his own congregation but by the whole community of Queensferry and beyond.

Beyond the normal work of a parish minister, John had many areas of special interest, including ministry for young people, care of the elderly in the community, ecumenical relations, overseas development particularly through Christian Aid and the Vine Trust and environmental issues.

A small committee was appointed from within the church to decide on a suitable and fitting memorial for John. It was agreed that whatever was decided should be a reflection of the John the man, his interests and what he stood for.

Following a request for possible suggestions from both the congregation and the wider community, much consideration and most importantly approval by John's family, it was decided to have two memorials.

The first is to be a specially commissioned stained glass window within the church. The exact window and the design have yet to be finalised and advice and assistance is being obtained from the Church Art and Architecture Committee of the Church of Scotland.

The second memorial reflects John's interest and concern in the Third World. John's family thought that a fitting memorial would be to fund the training of a teacher in Chogoria, Kenya. Once trained this teacher would go on to provide lasting benefits to countless numbers of children in the future. Negotiations are ongoing to find a suitable candidate in Chogoria.

It is estimated that to complete both these memorials will require a considerable amount of money, however it is felt that there will be enough people who will wish to contribute and support these memorials to John. Details of how you can be part of this can be obtained from the church office. The appeal will close on 31 August 2009. All donations will be treated in strict confidence.

Yours Sincerely,

A P. Laughlan Memorial Fund Secretary
